In year 9 I decided I wanted to be an architect. Yes, you read correctly. An architect. The ones who design buildings and see their construction through. In year 10, I decided I wanted to be a doctor. If I am being truly honest, my motives for choosing medicine were initially extremely superficial and uninformed. I decided on medicine because of my newfound love of biology lessons at school and medicine being the typical career path for someone who enjoys biology meant that I was set on medicine. When I followed this through by arranging work experience and attending a few courses to ascertain what a career in medicine entails, I found that a medicine degree is extremely versatile and has the potential to open numerous doors that would be very difficult to open otherwise. As I delved deeper into a career in medicine, learning that doctors can travel a lot as part of their careers, they can pursue other fields other than science, and there were so many specialities to choose from, medicine became more and more appealing to me. Upon completing work experience in various settings, I strengthened my desire to pursue medicine as I could see the world suffering and doctors have the skills and knowledge to make a true difference. That is why I wanted to be a doctor, and that is what drives me each day in my degree. Medicine is not just treating patients, it is a dynamic and constantly changing and evolving field, with the potential to make serious moves. That is why I love my degree. That is why I want to be a doctor.
